Arches Is My Favorite Watercolor Paper

Arches Is My Favorite Watercolor Paper

Best Watercolor Paper

Many times my students ask me why I like to use Arches Watercolor paper. I feel as though it is the best watercolor paper to use for any watercolor painting project. It is so forgiving and allows me to apply all the fun techniques which I will be talking about in my future blogs.

I recommend the rolls, full sheets, and half sheets for the avid painter. It is the most economical way to go and if you need to paint on a large scale , you can cut and customize the paper.

The Arches paper pads and Arches paper blocks are smaller and easy to tote around to classes or on a trip.

Arches Watercolor Paper-Weight

Arches Watercolor Paper comes in different weights:
  • 90lb
  • 140lb
  • 300lb
  • 500lb
  • The 90 lb paper is very thin and does not take a lot of water.
  • The 140 lb paper is the best for the beginner and is used by many artists
  • The 300lb and 500lb papers are very heavy and require a lot of water and pigment.
I use 300lb when I am painting on a large scale. I use 140lb for most of my paintings.

Arches Watercolor Paper surfaces are:
  • Hot press
  • Cold press
  • Rough press
Arches Hot Press Watercolor Paper:
The Arches Hot Press Paper is smooth and a little harder to control.

Arches Cold Press Watercolor Paper:
The Arches Cold Press paper has a little texture and is the most versatile.

Arches Rough Press Watercolor Paper:
The Arches Rough Press paper is fun, but is very bumpy and is a little harder to use.

I have tried other watercolor papers and just can't seem to get the results that I do with Arches. I am a true Arches girl!!!

Happy painting!

Debbie
